Sheffield United 1-1 West Bromwich Albion: George Campbell scores at both ends as Baggies hit back for a point

West Brom defender George Campbell scored at both ends as his struggling side hit back to snatch a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

It was a rollercoaster second half for the centre-back, first gifting the hosts the lead with an own goal before unleashing an incredible strike from distance to snatch a vital point for his team.

It was enough to lift the Baggies out of the bottom three by a point.

The Blades were looking to build on their impressive win at QPR last week and keep their hopes of a late play-off push alive.

West Bromn on the other hand were desperate to claim their first Championship victory of 2026 after dropping into the relegation places following Oxford's win on Friday night.

It was a scrappy first half, with no shots on target for either side.

Andre Brooks had the hosts' best chance after the West Brom defence failed to clear their lines, but his drive whistled just past a post.

At the other end, Krystian Bielik swung a leg at the ball but could only fire over the bar in his side's best opening of the first period.

Gustavo Hamer and Callum O'Hare saw plenty of the ball for United but struggled to break down a stubborn Baggies defence.

The second half started in a more open fashion and the visitors had a huge chance to take the lead.

Daryl Dike played in Isaac Price, but goalkeeper Adam Davies got down well to turn the ball behind for a corner.

That miss proved costly as it was the Blades who went ahead moments later on the 53rd minute. Hamer received the ball on the right and whipped in a searching low cross, which Campbell could only

turn into his own net.

United pressed for a second, Sydie Peck seeing his shot from close range blocked by team-mate O'Hare on the line.

Peck saw another chance go begging as his diving header from Hamer's cross went inches wide.

Substitute Tyrese Campbell had arguably the best chance to double the Blades' advantage, but keeper Max O'Leary made himself big to keep him out.

Instead, Campbell atoned for his earlier error, and in some style, in the 83rd minute as he picked up the ball and smashed an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner from long range.

Sheffield United's Chris Wilder:

"We were very loose in the first half. It was a stop and start sort of game. We never connected, too many heavy touches and we were forcing play.

"West Brom sat off us and we had to find a way to break them down. It's tough when there are a lot of bodies to get through, but we lacked urgency.

"In the second half, West Brom were more aggressive in their press and we were negative in too many situations. We went backwards and sideways so we ended up trying to play forward from deeper positions.

"We showed a little bit of quality and got that first goal, but we need to have enough about us to see it out or go and get that second goal. We've missed too many big chances."

West Brom's James Morrison:

"We were solid, I feel like they didn't threaten us too much up until the goal. After that we had to open up and they had a few chances, but United have been very good here of late so I'm happy we got the point.

"I said a few things last week that I probably shouldn't have, but I spoke with my heart. We've had a good week since then and I saw a reaction today.

"This gives us something to build on but we have to try and keep level-headed. We know we still have 10 more massive games to go."
